LANGUAGE | (SECONDARY) ENGLISH SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)

English as a Second Language (ESL) aims to provide students with additional support in a smaller class setting with the ultimate goal of students moving into mainstream English classes.

ESL in secondary runs from Years 7 to 9, and then in Years 10 and 11, students can complete their IGCSE in English as a second language.

The lessons focus on receptive and expressive skills. Receptive skills are listening and reading, and Expressive skills are speaking and writing.

Assessment will be both formative and summative, meaning there will be continuous assessment of class participation, classwork and homework, as well as formal quizzes, unit tests and exams (January and June).

Students will use the Global English Learner’s books in Years 7, 8 and 9.

In Years 7 to 9, students will follow the Cambridge Global English Curriculum, which includes another section called “Use of English.”

Year 9 students will also sit the Cambridge Checkpoint Exam.

Assessment will be both formative and summative, meaning there will be continuous assessment of class participation, classwork and homework, as well as formal quizzes, unit tests and exams.

Using the Cambridge IGCSE™ English as a Second Language Coursebook with Digital Access (2 Years), Year 10 and 11 students will prepare for the 0510 IGCSE English as a Second Language (Speaking endorsement) exam.

This exam consists of:

  • Paper 1 – Reading and Writing
  • Paper 2 – Listening
  • Paper 3 – Speaking**
