Introduction
Music is the key to the culture and life here at KIS. As an art form, music expresses thoughts, ideas and emotions through various events and activities at KIS. Learners gain experience and develop creativity through workshops, creating music, ensemble performances and concerts. The Music Department also enjoy opportunities to work with external organisations such as the Hong Kong Generation Next Arts Music Festival, Suitman a.k.a. Young Kim and Gaon Orchestra.
Music content is driven by the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and a collaborative learning approach is used in music lessons. The aim of Music as a subject is to provide our students with challenging and enjoyable performance opportunities. We hope to foster musical and social growth for each student through the process of rehearsing and performing music
Music at the secondary level is a combination of music appreciation and practical music. Besides learning about music theory, learners are exposed to performing and composing music. One of the objectives of music education is to provide learners with the ability to form an understanding of music and listening experiences in and with sound so that they can express themselves musically.
Through the Cambridge IGCSE Music syllabus, learners will be taught the conceptual and theoretical knowledge of music. Learners are encouraged to broaden their listening experiences, maintain one-to-one instrumental lessons, frequent performances and remain active performers, and cultivate an interest in composing music. This course encourages aesthetic and emotional development, self-discipline and creativity. Besides learning about Western European music, learners will also learn about the music of other cultures. As a result, learners’ appreciation of music and lifelong enjoyment of music is enhanced.
The Cambridge International AS and A Level Music course allow learners to become independent and critical thinkers. Learners are encouraged to develop and build on their existing musical skills by exploring various music genres and traditions, and developing new musical interests. The course is designed to expand learners’ broad listening and analytical skills, the ability to compose and perform with understanding, and the ability to present music as a confident communicator.
