MATHEMATICS
Studying mathematics in school is an integral part of learning to interpret the world around us, to develop critical thinking skills, to develop logic and spatial awareness. By age and year group, the curriculum is divided as follows:
Key Stage 3
- National Curriculum of England leading towards Cambridge IGCSE
Key Stage 4 (IGCSE)
- Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) Core and Extended.
- Accelerated students may have the opportunity to study IGCSE Cambridge Additional Mathematics (0606)
Key Stage 5 (AS and A levels)
- AQA AS Mathematics (7356) for Year 12 and AQA A-Level Mathematics (7357) for Year 13
- AQA AS Further Mathematics (7366)
- AQA A Level Further Mathematics (7367)
Assessment Procedure
- Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 have two end-of-term examinations usually held in January at the end of Term 1 and final examinations in June held at the end of Term 3
- Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 have mock examinations at the end of Term 1 and external board examinations in May/June
- All year groups have various formative assessments throughout the year that provide valuable feedback to students in areas of their strengths and weaknesses. Two summative assessments are held each term and are reflected on the student’s report
- Key Stage 3 may have group projects that are assessed
- For Key Stage 4 and 5, all assessments are exam based and there is no coursework involved
Department Facilities / Resources
Local and international competitions, field trips, overseas trips, after-school support and enrichment clubs.
Key Points from Department Policy:
- To ensure students learn to think and work “mathematically” by using theorems, conjectures and rules to solve mathematical problems
- To equip learners to use quantitative reasoning in the real world
- To develop spatial reasoning by studying properties and attributes of various 2-D and 3-D shapes
- To support the individual needs of every student based on their mathematical abilities
- To create confident global citizens of the world who are supportive peers and kind human beings
